The Story of The Man Who Reinvented the Rubber Boot—TWICE

USE Code F4P25 for 25% off your order through the end of 2026! The Dryshod story starts well before the Dryshod name. Brad Hahn explains that he and his business partners had previously worked with the Muck Boot product line, while their partner Jim Donahue was the original creator behind Muck Boots. After their relationship with the brand ended in 2017, they called Jim about designing a new product. His response? He had been waiting years for the opportunity and already knew what he wanted to do differently. Dryshod launched with roughly 20–25 products and has since expanded to around 100 SKUs. The conversation explores how rubber-neoprene boots evolved and what Dryshod says it changed in its designs. Brad walks through features including aggressive outsole designs intended to shed mud, heel kicks for easier removal, larger toe bumpers, EVA midsoles for shock absorption, internal shanks for support, four-way-stretch neoprene and Hydracoat, a treatment designed to keep the neoprene exterior from absorbing water and contaminants.  They also get into one of the biggest challenges with waterproof footwear: keeping feet comfortable. Brad explains how Dryshod uses air-mesh and moisture-management liners to create air movement inside a boot even though neoprene itself doesn't breathe. The newer Dereva outsole takes inspiration from athletic footwear and, according to Brad, removes roughly a pound of weight from a pair compared with older sole technology while maintaining durability.  From cattle lots and muddy fields to hunting, construction, oil fields and commercial fishing, the crew talks through how different jobs require different footwear—and why fit, support and traction matter when you're on your feet all day. Brad estimates roughly 55% of Dryshod's business is farm/ag-related and discusses specialized safety-toe and commercial products as well. The episode wraps with a simple piece of advice for anyone shopping for boots: take them out of the box, try them on and pay attention to fit, arch support and cushioning rather than choosing on price alone. Built to Last: Maya Corn Heads Without Planned Obsolescence cover art

Built to Last: Maya Corn Heads Without Planned Obsolescence

Maya's U.S. story began when co-owner Justin Bruch discovered the corn head while farming in Ukraine and brought one back to Iowa. Rick Nelson eventually tried the head on his own family farm, became impressed with its construction and harvesting performance, and bought into the business around 2014. More than a decade later, Rick says the basic row-unit design has remained largely unchanged because the fundamentals were already right.  One of the biggest differences is the longer row unit. Maya can run the head flatter—around a 15- to 17-degree angle—and use longer snapping rolls operating around 500–550 RPM. Rick explains that the larger working area allows the plant to be pulled through the deck plates more slowly, which can reduce butt shelling compared with a shorter row unit that has to operate faster. Maya also manufactures most of its gearboxes and row-unit components in-house, which Rick credits for the head's durability and quality control.  Maintenance is another major selling point. Maya calls it an “annual maintenance head.” Beyond routine attention to components such as the combine drive-shaft U-joints and folding hinge points, Rick says a properly serviced head can generally run through the season without daily row-unit greasing. Its chopping option is designed for lower maintenance as well, with angled chopping action intended to reduce horsepower requirements while distributing residue evenly across the field.  Corey also shares his experience harvesting completely flattened corn after the 2020 Iowa derecho. Instead of installing a traditional corn reel, Maya's down-corn units replace selected snouts with units containing an additional gathering chain that runs up the center of the snoot. Farmers can install them only on the rows necessary, retain the ability to fold the head, and remove or resell the units afterward. Rick emphasizes that Maya isn't simply a down-corn head—the system is an added layer of “cheap insurance” when wind, disease, or other conditions put a standing crop on the ground.  Ultimately, Rick encourages farmers to evaluate total cost of ownership, not just purchase price. Maya offers a three-year unlimited-acre warranty, and Rick says he knows of multiple 16-row heads with more than 30,000 acres that have yet to replace a gearbox, row unit, or knife roller. His explanation of the philosophy behind the head is straightforward: it's built without planned obsolescence—“built how it used to be” and how he believes equipment should be built. Is Your Farm Ready for Higher Interest Rates? cover art

Is Your Farm Ready for Higher Interest Rates?

FBN Finance was built around the idea that agricultural borrowers should have more of the transparency and convenience consumers have when shopping for financing. Dan explains that FBN combines a digital application process and visible pricing with agricultural credit professionals who understand the complexities of farm operations. That becomes increasingly important as farmers navigate higher borrowing costs and become more cautious about how much debt their operations can sustainably support.  For farmers with a farmland loan approaching a rate reset or balloon, Dan's advice starts before shopping for another lender: read the documents you already signed. Understand when the rate resets, whether there's a cap, what rate it would reset to today, and whether you can move between variable- and fixed-rate products. Starting early gives borrowers more time to compare alternatives and avoid getting trapped by deadlines, fees, or unfavorable terms.  The conversation also explores buying farmland in today's environment. Strategic parcels may only become available once in a generation, but higher rates make cash flow and leverage increasingly important. Farmers hoping to purchase their first or next farm can improve their readiness by maintaining an updated balance sheet, filing tax returns promptly, checking their credit, knowing all of their assets and debts, and developing realistic projections based on today's commodity prices—not optimistic assumptions. FBN also offers prequalification options so a borrower can be positioned to move quickly when the right property becomes available.  For operations already feeling financial pressure, the discussion gets more difficult but practical: evaluate whether every piece of equipment is necessary, understand profitability on owned and rented acres, examine grain-marketing opportunities, and prioritize the most expensive debt. Dan's recurring message is that time creates options. Whether you're refinancing, trying to buy the neighboring farm, or attempting to right-size an over-leveraged operation, addressing the situation early generally gives you more choices than waiting until a payment or maturity date forces the decision. A Farm Accident That Changed Everything | Iowa Dairy Farmer Dan cover art

A Farm Accident That Changed Everything | Iowa Dairy Farmer Dan

Dan takes the guys inside his Northeast Iowa dairy, where his family milks nearly 200 Holsteins with three Lely A5 robots, an automated Lely Vector feeding system, and a Lely Calm calf feeder. Dan explains why automation isn't simply about replacing labor—it's about efficiency, lifestyle and allowing a relatively small dairy to produce millions of pounds of milk with very few employees. His philosophy is simple: technology won't turn a bad manager into a good one, but it can help turn a good manager into a great one.  They also discuss dairy genetics, beef-on-dairy calves, profitability and Dan's approach to agricultural advocacy. With an audience that extends well beyond agriculture, Dan believes farmers shouldn't be afraid of difficult conversations. His approach is “brutally honest transparency”—showing consumers what actually happens on a farm rather than assuming they can't handle uncomfortable truths about food production.  Then Dan shares the story that changed his family. While spot planting a wet field, Dan unknowingly pulled forward while his father was in front of the planter. When Dan looked in the mirror, he saw his dad on the ground and heard him barely say, “I got run over. Call 911.” What followed included an ambulance ride, Life Flight, emergency surgery, two weeks in the ICU and a long rehabilitation from devastating injuries. Dan shares the guilt, fear and “what ifs” surrounding the accident, while reminding farmers how quickly familiarity and routine around equipment can become dangerous.  Out of an experience that nearly ended in tragedy came an unexpected gift: Dan says his relationship with his dad is now the best it has ever been. His takeaway is one that extends far beyond farm safety—don't wait for something terrible to happen to say the things that matter. Want Farm4Profit Merch? Free Money for the Farm? Understanding REAP & EQIP cover art

Free Money for the Farm? Understanding REAP & EQIP

Farm margins are tight, but there are still programs designed to help producers invest in energy efficiency and infrastructure. Bethany from GDS Associates says EQIP continues to fund projects, while REAP had been paused as changes were made under the new administration. At the time of the interview, GDS said they were hearing REAP was expected to reopen in the fall. One of the biggest takeaways is understanding the difference between the programs—and not starting too soon. With EQIP, Bethany advises producers not to change anything until they've received approval. REAP can offer more flexibility once a complete application is officially in the system. EQIP generally works from a defined list of eligible energy improvements, while REAP can accommodate a broader range of projects and technologies. Those projects can include everything from high-efficiency grain dryers and replacing PTO augers with electric grain legs to dump pits, dairy robots, manure systems, poultry barn improvements, solar, wind, digesters, and geothermal. GDS stresses that not every technology makes financial sense on every farm, so the first step should be evaluating the economics rather than chasing a grant simply because money may be available. GDS also provides energy audits, feasibility work, and grant writing. Before a farmer spends the money to pursue an application, the team can use USDA's scoring process to estimate how competitive the project may be. In several states, GDS says it even has funding available to provide some of these services at no cost. The goal is simple: determine whether the project makes financial sense, identify available assistance, and help farmers keep more money in their operation. Want Farm4Profit Merch? Perfect Sundays & Project Farm Dog: Starting the Conversations That Matter cover art

Perfect Sundays & Project Farm Dog: Starting the Conversations That Matter

Why can mental health be so difficult to talk about in agriculture? Sam and Easton explore the unique pressures farmers carry—from finances and isolation to the responsibility of keeping land and a family legacy alive. Rather than blaming farmers for being unwilling to talk, they challenge agriculture to create better opportunities for conversations to happen naturally and earlier. Sam shares the story behind Perfect Sundays, a six-episode fictional drama created after farmers repeatedly encouraged him to address farmer suicide following the success of his film Silo. The series follows a dairy family rebuilding after losing its patriarch to suicide and a mother's attempt to create a value-added ice cream business. By using entertainment and authentic farm storytelling, Sam hopes viewers see themselves in the characters and begin conversations that may otherwise be difficult to have.  Easton introduces Project Farm Dog, a nonprofit shaped in part by his family's experience losing his father after a long battle with alcoholism. Farm Dog isn't intended to replace crisis resources such as 988. Its focus is prevention: reducing stigma, connecting farmers with professionals who understand agriculture, and funding care so cost and insurance don't become additional barriers. Its “trusted ear” concept comes from the relationship many farmers have with their farm dog—a place where even the toughest farmer may let their guard down.  The message is ultimately about acting before the difficult season arrives. Just as farmers prepare equipment, marketing plans and labor before harvest, Easton argues that health, wellness and relationships should be part of that same checklist. Building resilience, checking on a neighbor, saying a problem out loud, and knowing where to turn for help can all make a difference. Farmer mental health isn't one person's responsibility—it will take farmers, families, agribusinesses and communities working together to make asking for help a normal part of agriculture. He Bought 80 Acres. Then Asked Customers What to Grow. cover art

He Bought 80 Acres. Then Asked Customers What to Grow.

Tom Brown didn't grow up farming. After studying anthropology and horticulture at Kansas State, he spent roughly 15 years living and working in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he gained experience in agribusiness development, seed production, horticulture, and helping farmers improve their operations. When he eventually returned to the United States, the desire to build a farm of his own was still there. Instead of starting with what he wanted to grow, Tom started by asking potential customers what they wanted to buy. The answer was fresh, pick-your-own peaches. He intentionally searched within a 30-minute drive of Wichita and purchased 80 acres in 2010 for $225,000.00. Today, Meadowlark includes roughly 18 acres of peaches, 17–18 acres of apples, two acres of strawberries, two acres of pumpkins, and a hard cider business.  Tom explains how agritourism changes the way a farmer thinks about everything from orchard layout and parking to crop selection and customer experience. Feedback from families helped drive Meadowlark's expansion into apples, while fallen fruit that could have become waste created an additional opportunity through hard cider. The result is a business built around multiple revenue streams rather than production alone.  The conversation also gets into the numbers. Tom uses Ambrook to help track the finances of a complicated operation with multiple enterprises and direct costs. As the orchard approaches its physical production limits, he sees future growth coming primarily from cider sales and on-farm experiences, which he believes could significantly increase gross revenue over the next five years. His biggest lesson applies well beyond specialty crops: farming changes slowly, mistakes are expensive, and “every lesson takes a year.” Want Farm4Profit Merch? Your Soil Has Potassium. So Why Can’t Your Crop Get It? cover art

Your Soil Has Potassium. So Why Can’t Your Crop Get It?

https://agxplore.com/assessment/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=us_branding_search&utm_content=us_branding_search&utm_creative=&utm_term=nitrogen%20fertilizer%E2%80%A8&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19647814938&gbraid=0AAAAABcjE32bUOUfaJpssNXD_ZsSRg9jE   Potassium is a macronutrient crops need throughout the growing season, but simply having adequate soil levels doesn't guarantee the plant can access it. The AgXplore team explains that roots only explore a portion of the soil profile and potassium movement is heavily tied to water—creating a challenge during dry late-season conditions when crop demand can still be significant. Dr. John and Ben discuss potassium acetate as a highly plant-available form and explain potassium's role in photosynthesis, stalk quality, standability, and the opening and closing of stomata. That stomatal function becomes especially important under heat and moisture stress because it affects transpiration and the plant's ability to continue moving water and nutrients. The conversation then turns to timing. AgXplore's Nutri-K provides potassium acetate, while KSB combines potassium, sulfur, boron, and biostimulants. The team says late-season applications have produced positive results across several crops and geographies. In one replicated Wisconsin trial discussed in the episode, potassium treatments improved yield by roughly 5–10 bushels, with the guests citing a minimum ROI around 6-to-1 in that trial. They also found that stacking an earlier application with a later application performed better than a single application. The bigger takeaway isn't simply to apply more potassium. It's about understanding the crop's demand curve and supplying “the right groceries at the right time.” Soil fertility still provides the foundation, but strategically timed nutrition may help keep the crop functioning and finishing stronger when environmental conditions make soil uptake more difficult. Every Pass Has to Pay: Smarter Tillage & Fertilizer cover art

Every Pass Has to Pay: Smarter Tillage & Fertilizer

Does tillage make money? The answer isn't simply yes or no. The KUHN team explains why the industry is moving away from “recreational tillage” toward more calculated, specialized passes designed to solve specific problems. From managing heavy residue and correcting compaction to creating a seedbed, the goal is to understand what the field needs and then determine whether the fuel, labor, equipment, and time required can generate a return. The conversation also challenges the idea that broadcast fertilizer is simply “slinging it.” Garrick explains how modern precision spreaders control drop points, spread patterns, application rates, section control, and border spreading. KUHN's EMC system measures torque on the spinner discs every second and can respond to changing material flow, clogs, and over- or under-application to maintain the target rate.  Then the guys get into strip-till and KUHN's new 24-row 1210 Gladiator XL. Beyond reducing passes, strip-till can combine targeted tillage with concentrated fertilizer placement in the root zone. KUHN discusses trials where an 8- to 10-bushel yield gain across enough acres could potentially create a roughly two-year equipment payback, while more efficient nutrient placement may offer opportunities to rethink fertilizer rates.  Ultimately, this episode isn't about convincing every farmer to till—or not to till. It's about knowing why you're making the pass. Soil type, compaction, residue, fertility, pH, equipment, labor, timeliness, and management style all matter. The right system is the one that solves a problem on your farm and can justify its cost. Want Farm4Profit Merch? Beyond the Farm: How Regan & Andrea Are Building Their Own Path

Andrea Fleming and Regan Bieber return to Farm4Fun to share how their lives and operations have changed since their previous appearances. Regan talks about stepping back into her South Dakota family farm during the COVID era while continuing to grow The Cactus Brand, which she started in high school. Andrea shares how a plan to become a veterinarian ultimately brought her back to the Minnesota family farm, where she now combines cattle, crops, content creation, personal training, public speaking, agritourism, and a few fainting goats.  The conversation gets deeper as they discuss the growing disconnect between farmers and consumers. Andrea explains why she decided to publicly stand up for feedlots and modern livestock production rather than letting outdated images define agriculture. Both women believe farmers need to keep showing up, have conversations, and show people what agriculture actually looks like instead of simply throwing facts at them. They also talk about being women in a traditionally male-dominated industry, encouraging daughters to get involved on the farm, and giving young people the opportunity to prove what they're capable of. Andrea shares the personal story behind her message that changing plans doesn't make you a failure, while Regan explains why farming, fashion, business, and creativity don't have to fit into separate lanes. It's a fun conversation about building a life in agriculture without feeling like there's only one way to do it. Want Farm4Profit Merch? How Do You Move 23,000 Bushels of Grain Per Hour cover art

How Do You Move 23,000 Bushels of Grain Per Hour

In this What’s Working in Ag segment, Tanner gets an up-close look at Brandt’s 16125 HP Swingaway Auger. With bins continuing to get taller and wider, Brandt says demand is growing for equipment capable of keeping up. The 16125 can move up to 23,000 bushels per hour, with Brandt recommending roughly a 300-horsepower tractor for the job. Chance explains the engineering behind Brandt’s HP—or High Performance—design, including an oversized 17-inch intake section and hopper designed to keep the main auger full and increase capacity. The Easy Swing System also allows operators to hydraulically position the heavy swing hopper from either side and control it through truck remotes or Brandt’s LeadHand App on a smartphone.  The result is serious grain-moving capacity—roughly enough to unload a 1,000-bushel truck about every five minutes. Brandt also offers 10- and 13-inch auger options, while the 16-inch model adds an A-frame undercarriage, extendable axles, heavy lift cylinders, and adjustable cables for stability when reaching larger bins. Thin Margins, Expensive Nitrogen & the Agronomy Decisions That Pay cover art

Thin Margins, Expensive Nitrogen & the Agronomy Decisions That Pay

Dr. Eric Scherder of Corteva Agriscience returns to Farm4Profit to look back at the 2026 growing season and help farmers start building their 2027 agronomy plan. The conversation begins with cover crops and why simply getting seed on the ground isn't enough. From erosion and nitrate management to weed suppression and soil health, Eric explains why farmers need to know their objective, establish a good stand, and have a termination strategy before spring arrives. The discussion moves into weed management and the importance of starting clean, using multiple modes of action, and layering residuals—especially in early-planted soybeans. Eric challenges farmers to think beyond a one-size-fits-all herbicide program and use the entire agronomic toolbox, including cover crops, no-till, row spacing, crop rotation, residual herbicides, and emerging technologies like See & Spray.  With nitrogen representing one of the largest crop investments, the guys also discuss fall versus spring application, nitrogen loss, and why stabilization matters beyond the fall application window. Eric explains the science behind N-Serve and Instinct Next Gen, why keeping nitrogen in the ammonium form can help protect it from loss, and how farmers can match nitrogen practices to the logistics and realities of their individual operations.  Ultimately, the message is simple: don't treat every field the same. Use what you learned in 2026, test new ideas where they make sense, work with trusted local advisors, and build a 2027 plan around the specific challenges and opportunities on your farm. Farm Accidents, Family & Ranching with Calli Williams of TW Angus cover art

Farm Accidents, Family & Ranching with Calli Williams of TW Angus

Calli Williams, the Millennial Rancher, joins Farm4Fun to share the story behind TW Angus and what it takes to build a first-generation cattle operation in South Dakota. Calli grew up around cattle, 4-H, and FFA, while her husband Tate grew up without a livestock background and got his start by taking out a loan to buy a couple of heifers.  Calli explains how TW Angus balances an annual online bull sale with a growing direct-to-consumer beef business. After deciding in 2020 to stop selling calves through the sale barn, they began finishing cattle themselves and eventually expanded from freezer beef into individual retail cuts, local markets, restaurants, and now beef sticks.  The conversation also gets much more personal as Calli recounts Tate's frightening 2023 baler accident, eight surgeries in ten weeks, and the long recovery that followed. It's a powerful reminder about fatigue, farm safety, and the consequences that can come from trying to squeeze in one more job at the end of a long day.  Calli also shares how becoming one of ten members of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Trailblazer Program opened doors for media training, a CNN appearance, and even a trip to the White House. Through social media and agricultural advocacy, she's using those opportunities not only to tell agriculture's story, but to build recognition and opportunity for TW Angus and the next generation. 200-Bushel Corn at $14? Understanding the Opportunity cover art

200-Bushel Corn at $14? Understanding the Opportunity

Greg Schreiner of Quick Organics returns with some major updates, including collaboration with USDA around the Common Organic System Plan and new tools designed to simplify one of the biggest headaches in organic farming: recordkeeping. Quick Organics now combines its Organic System Plan tools with an activity tracker and digital filing cabinet, allowing producers to document field activities, seed labels, cultivation dates, and certification records from their phones.  But this conversation isn't about convincing every farmer to go organic. It's about helping the "organic curious" understand whether it could make financial sense for a portion of their operation. Greg tackles concerns about yield loss and explains why he believes 180–200+ bushel organic corn combined with organic premiums can create compelling gross revenue potential. They also break down the equipment needed to make the transition, including tine weeders, rotary hoes, cultivators, manure sources, and GPS technology. Greg estimates a producer could potentially assemble the additional equipment needed for under $75,000 and explains why starting with 80 or 160 acres may make more sense than transitioning an entire farm at once. Finally, Greg explains the three-year organic transition window, why timing the transition matters, and how producers may be able to position their third crop for organic pricing when the process is planned correctly. With conventional margins under pressure, this episode explores whether adding organic production could become another tool for diversifying revenue and improving the farm's overall bottom line. From Farm Trials to Equity: A Different Way to Build AgTech cover art

From Farm Trials to Equity: A Different Way to Build AgTech

How does an agricultural idea go from someone's garage or university lab to something farmers actually want to use? AgLaunch's Margaret Oldham and North Central Iowa farmer Mark take Farm4Profit behind the scenes of a startup accelerator built around putting farmers directly into the innovation process. Through AgLaunch Farmers LLC and its partnership with AgVentures Alliance, farmers help select startups, conduct real-world trials, provide feedback, and determine whether a product actually delivers value. Instead of simply receiving a free product for their time and acres, participating farmers can earn equity tied to the startups they're helping develop. The group discusses why farmer involvement is so valuable, what causes startups to fail, bootstrapping versus venture capital, and a newly licensed $50 million Farmers Innovation Fund designed to help support agricultural startups while keeping farmers and rural America at the center of the mission. Mark also shares real examples from his own farm, including Grain Weevil and Spornado, and how emerging technology can address everything from grain-bin safety to earlier detection of crop diseases. Ultimately, the episode asks an important question: if farmers provide the land, equipment, time, data, and knowledge that help make new technology successful, shouldn't they have some skin in the game too? AI, Data & Trust with Amazon Exec Dr. Karen Hildebrand cover art

AI, Data & Trust with Amazon Exec Dr. Karen Hildebrand

What does Amazon Web Services (one of the worlds largest companies) have to do with agriculture? A lot more than most farmers probably realize. Dr. Karen Hildebrand joins Farm4Profit at Tech Hub LIVE to explain how AWS supports agricultural technology companies around the world and why she believes successful innovation has to start by working backward from the problems farmers actually need solved. Karen brings a unique perspective as both a technologist and a fourth-generation Manitoba farmer. The conversation explores the explosion of AI tools, how farmers can avoid technology overload, and why there probably isn't a single AI "golden nugget" that's suddenly going to make a farm profitable. Instead, Karen encourages farmers to use technology to eliminate the parts of the job they hate while protecting the relationships and experiences they value most.  The crew also tackles data, trust, connectivity, ag startups, data centers, and what AI could mean for the next generation. Karen explains why trust may be more valuable than data itself, why farmers should give technology companies honest feedback, and why AI could represent a technological shift as significant as the transition from horses to automobiles. Carbon Markets, CI Scores & 45Z: Separating Fact from Fiction cover art

Carbon Markets, CI Scores & 45Z: Separating Fact from Fiction

Carbon credits. Regenerative agriculture. CI scores. 45Z. If you've been hearing these terms but still aren't sure what they actually mean for your farm, this episode is for you. Tanner, Corey, and Dave sit down with Kelly Garrett of XtremeAg and Mike Busing of Windy Ridge Ag to unpack one of the most talked-about opportunities facing corn growers today: 45Z. The conversation begins by looking back at the rise and fall of carbon markets. Mike shares his experience helping build one of the country's largest carbon programs through Regenerative Roots, while Kelly explains why the lack of standardized rules ultimately slowed the market's momentum. Together, they discuss why voluntary carbon programs struggled, how international demand still exists, and what lessons were learned from the "Wild West" days of carbon credits. From there, the discussion shifts to 45Z—a federal clean fuel production tax credit that could fundamentally change how ethanol plants value grain. Kelly and Mike explain how carbon intensity (CI) scores work, why low-CI corn could become increasingly valuable, and how competition between ethanol plants may create new revenue opportunities for farmers. They also discuss why the Treasury Department's final guidance is so critical and how regional differences could determine who benefits the most. The group also explores larger questions surrounding government incentives, environmental policy, and whether 45Z is simply another subsidy or a meaningful shift toward rewarding more efficient farming practices. Along the way, they debate whether the current program represents a "carrot" that encourages voluntary change—or whether future regulations could eventually become the "stick" if agriculture doesn't continue improving on its own. Whether you're skeptical, optimistic, or simply trying to understand what everyone is talking about, this episode delivers one of the most practical conversations we've had on the future of carbon markets and the role 45Z could play in improving farm profitability. Grain Quality : What to Do with Fines, FM, & Your Grain

Kyle Kirchhoff joins Farm4Profit for a conversation about manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and an often-overlooked piece of grain management: grain quality. Kyle shares how growing up on a Southwest Iowa farm, studying welding and metallurgy, and starting a small repair business eventually led to KWF and the acquisition of the Magik Grain Cleaners product line.  The discussion digs into how removing fines, cracked kernels, weed seeds, dirt, and other foreign material can improve airflow and grain storage while potentially reducing discounts at delivery. Kyle explains how the gravity-fed cleaners work without an external power source, where they can fit into a farm's grain-handling system, and why different crops and specialty markets require different screen configurations. The guys also tackle the question every farmer wants answered: Does grain cleaning actually pay? Kyle shares examples ranging from avoiding dockage and rejected specialty grain to a North Dakota customer who said the savings from one bin could have paid for his cleaner. They also explore portable cleaning systems, potential drying and airflow efficiencies, cleaning versus scalping, and whether cleaner grain could become another tool for protecting the value of every bushel farmers produce. From the Cornfield to the Checkered Flag: Ethanol Wins Every Race

Farm4Profit heads to Iowa Speedway for the Iowa Corn 350 powered by Ethanol with Craig Floss, CEO of Iowa Corn, and Eric Petersen, President of Iowa Speedway, to talk NASCAR, ethanol, corn demand, and what’s ahead for racing in Iowa. The conversation dives into why Iowa Corn continues to invest in NASCAR as a way to promote ethanol beyond the farm audience. NASCAR has raced on E15 since 2011, providing a high-performance example of ethanol in action while helping Iowa Corn reach consumers and build demand for one of Iowa farmers’ biggest products. Craig shares the bigger picture for ethanol, including growing exports to countries around the world, opportunities in Southeast Asia, and the continued push for greater access to E15 and eventually higher ethanol blends. The group also discusses Iowa Corn’s work around high-ethanol farm equipment and why creating additional ethanol demand could have a meaningful impact on corn markets and farm profitability. Eric gives listeners a look behind the scenes at Iowa Speedway, including three consecutive NASCAR sellouts, plans for a complete track repave, and the exciting news that NASCAR will return to Iowa over Independence Day weekend in 2027. He explains what goes into rebuilding a racing surface and the massive amount of work required to turn a facility with only nine full-time employees into a major NASCAR venue. From international ethanol markets to 700-horsepower race cars, this episode shows how Iowa Corn is using motorsports to connect farmers with consumers, demonstrate ethanol performance, and ultimately create more demand for corn. As Craig puts it, no matter which driver takes the checkered flag, ethanol and Iowa corn farmers win every race.     Want Farm4Profit Merch? Every Kernel Counts: Measuring Combine Loss

But how many actually know what those kernels are worth? In this episode of What's Working in Ag, Shianne from BranValt explains how the SmartPan harvest loss system helps farmers move beyond visual estimates and accurately measure the grain leaving the back of the combine. The discussion covers how the magnetic SmartPan captures real-time grain samples, how the accompanying app converts those samples into bushels, percentages, and dollars, and why calibrating your combine's loss sensors is critical for making informed adjustments during harvest. Using real-world examples, the Farm4Profit crew walks through soybean and corn scenarios showing how relatively small harvest losses can quickly become thousands of dollars across an operation. The conversation also explores balancing grain quality with harvest speed, automation, and why "you can't manage what you don't measure." Topics include: Combine harvest loss SmartPan technology Grain loss monitoring Harvest efficiency Combine calibration Soybean harvest Corn harvest Precision agriculture John Deere automation Yield preservation Harvest ROI Farm profitability Grain loss calculations Precision harvesting If you're looking for one of the fastest ways to improve profitability without buying another acre, this episode demonstrates why measuring harvest loss should be part of every harvest routine. Former Traders Reveal How Grain Merchants Really Think cover art

Former Traders Reveal How Grain Merchants Really Think

Most farmers spend countless hours trying to grow another five bushels per acre. Mike Rolfsen and Jeff Kazin believe there may be an even bigger opportunity waiting after harvest. The Agris Academy co-founders return to Farm4Profit to explain why merchandising—not market prediction—is where many producers leave money on the table. Drawing on decades of experience trading commodities and managing physical grain businesses at Cargill, they explain how successful grain companies approach risk, logistics, negotiations, and marketing far differently than most farms. One of the biggest themes throughout the conversation is that grain marketing isn't about predicting prices—it's about managing risk. Mike and Jeff explain why commercial grain companies hedge rather than speculate, and why farmers should think more like professional risk managers than market forecasters. Instead of trying to outguess the futures market, producers should focus on the controllable parts of merchandising that consistently add value year after year. The discussion also explores what life inside one of the world's largest grain companies actually looks like. While many people imagine traders constantly buying and selling futures contracts, Mike and Jeff explain that most of their time was spent optimizing logistics, transportation, physical grain movement, basis opportunities, and operational details that collectively create significant value. They then introduce Agris Academy, the education platform they founded to teach farmers the merchandising skills they believe are missing from traditional agricultural education. Unlike brokerage firms or advisory services, Agris Academy focuses entirely on helping producers understand grain marketing mechanics, negotiation strategies, basis, carry, storage economics, and risk management principles that can be applied to any farming operation. Throughout the episode they discuss: Why hedging should never be confused with speculation. The psychology behind futures markets. How margin calls actually work. Why documenting marketing decisions improves long-term discipline. Why every farm's marketing plan should match its own financial situation instead of following someone else's advice. One of the biggest takeaways is their concept of creating a "knowledge asset." While farms continually invest in land, machinery, and buildings, Mike and Jeff argue that merchandising education creates an asset that can benefit multiple generations. Once the skills are learned, they become part of the operation's long-term competitive advantage and can be passed down just like any physical asset. The conversation also dives into one of agriculture's biggest capital decisions: grain storage. Mike and Jeff explain why the economics of permanent grain bins have changed dramatically, why many large farms are now using grain bags as flexible storage, and how understanding carry, basis, and storage costs often matters more than simply adding more bins. They also discuss treating on-farm storage like a commercial elevator instead of simply holding grain until later in the year. Another important topic is cost of production. While understanding production costs remains critical for managing the farm business, Mike and Jeff explain why the futures market doesn't care what any individual producer's breakeven happens to be. Instead, successful marketers focus on managing risk, understanding merchandising opportunities, and maximizing basis and carry opportunities available in their local markets. The episode also covers: Negotiation strategies farmers can immediately apply. Why every marketing plan should be documented. Learning to think like an elevator. Separating farm performance from speculative trading. Why women often excel at grain merchandising. Building marketing confidence through repetition and small steps instead of large speculative bets. To wrap things up, Mike and Jeff share several entertaining stories from their international trading careers—including stolen vegetable oil, disappearing sugar shipments, homemade liquor in Eastern Europe, and why, after working around the globe, they still believe the United States remains one of the best places in the world to farm. If you've ever wondered how professional grain merchandisers think—or how to make more money without growing more bushels—this episode delivers practical insights you can begin applying immediately. Mike Naig: The Pressure Farmers Are Feeling and the Next Opportunity cover art

Mike Naig: The Pressure Farmers Are Feeling and the Next Opportunity

In this episode of Farm4Profit, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig returns to the studio for a conversation that covers nearly every major issue impacting producers today. Mike begins by sharing how he balances his role as Secretary of Agriculture with remaining involved in his family’s fourth-generation northwest Iowa farm. He discusses growing up around corn, soybeans, and hogs, how the family operation has evolved, and why having one foot in production agriculture continues to shape the way he approaches his job. The conversation quickly turns to one of agriculture’s biggest uncontrollable variables: weather. Iowa farmers have dealt with derechos, excessive rainfall, flooding, drought, and increasingly severe weather events. Mike explains why risk management, infrastructure, crop resilience, and better monitoring tools are becoming even more important as producers try to manage events they simply cannot control. The crew also talks openly about the mental and financial pressure farmers are feeling. Tight margins, extreme weather, policy uncertainty, and growing public criticism of agriculture are all piling up at the same time. Mike says he has noticed increasing frustration among producers who feel they are being blamed for problems while already operating under significant financial stress. Water quality becomes a major part of the discussion. Mike breaks down Iowa’s nutrient reduction efforts, progress on phosphorus, ongoing nitrate challenges, and the state’s new “Farm to Faucet” approach. That effort includes increased nitrate treatment capacity, expanded water monitoring, conservation funding, cover crop incentives, streamside buffers, and more than $50 million targeted toward conservation practices in the Greater Des Moines Watershed over the next 12 years. The group also tackles one of Iowa’s most controversial conversations: whether agriculture is being unfairly blamed for cancer rates in the state. Mike stresses that the issue is complex and should be driven by research rather than politics. He points to known risk factors including radon, smoking, alcohol use, obesity, and sun exposure while also supporting continued research into environmental and genetic factors. From there, the episode moves into biofuels and new revenue opportunities. Mike discusses Iowa’s growing use of E15, the economic benefits ethanol provides consumers, the potential of 45Z, and why future clean-fuel programs could create additional revenue streams for farmers if measurement and reporting requirements can be made practical. One of the biggest opportunities Mike sees for Iowa is cattle. With the U.S. cow herd at historically low levels, Mike believes Iowa has room to grow beef production—especially by identifying row crop acres that are underperforming because of slope, erosion, wetness, or poor soil productivity and converting those acres into pasture or forage. He explains how the state’s cattle and conservation programs are already helping connect landowners with livestock producers while supporting fencing, water access, pasture establishment, and even virtual fencing. That conversation naturally leads into the next generation of agriculture. Mike and the Farm4Profit crew discuss how livestock can create a realistic entry point for young producers who may have labor and ambition but lack capital. They explore ideas around financing, conservation incentives, access to land, custom farming, direct-to-consumer agriculture, specialty crops, and off-farm income as ways to create more opportunities for young people to build a future in agriculture. Mike also shares his view that profitability has to remain at the center of every agricultural conversation. Conservation, technology, diversification, and policy only work if the farm itself can remain financially viable. He discusses input costs, market development, trade, Farm Bill uncertainty, E15, and the many pieces that have to come together for producers to succeed. The episode also looks ahead to Iowa’s changing political landscape, Mike’s 2026 reelection campaign, the role of the Secretary of Agriculture, animal disease preparedness, food safety, pesticide regulation, and why Iowa agriculture remains one of the state’s greatest economic strengths. The conversation ends with a question Farm4Profit hears everywhere: How does a young person get into farming? Mike’s answer is simple—there is no golden ticket. But there are more paths than ever. Livestock, direct-to-consumer sales, custom application, drones, seed sales, specialty crops, custom farming, and other farm-adjacent businesses can all provide a foothold. His message: farming has never been easy to enter, but agriculture should work to make sure it doesn’t become unnecessarily harder. This episode is a wide-ranging look at where Iowa agriculture stands today—and what farmers, policymakers, and rural communities need to think about next. Want Farm4Profit Merch? In this entertaining What's Working in Ag episode, the AgXplore team shares some of their favorite analogies that have helped thousands of growers better understand soil fertility, nutrient availability, plant physiology, and crop nutrition. Instead of memorizing technical terms, listeners will finally understand: Why cation exchange capacity (CEC) is like the size of a parking lot. How base saturation determines whether nutrients have a place to "park." Why chelated nutrients behave like M&M's instead of jawbreakers. How boron functions like an old vehicle's power antenna. Why every nutrient matters when building a crop—just like every brick matters when building a wall. How tiny amounts of plant growth regulators can have massive biological impacts. The conversation also explores why storytelling is one of the most effective teaching tools in agriculture and how simplifying complex science leads to better agronomic decisions on the farm. Whether you're new to crop nutrition or have been farming for decades, this episode will leave you looking at your soil tests—and your crop—completely differently. Want Farm4Profit Merch? AI, Fiber & the Future of Rural Connectivity cover art

AI, Fiber & the Future of Rural Connectivity

For over 125 years, Farmers Mutual Telephone Company (FMTC) has helped connect rural Iowa—first with telephones, then cable television, cellular service, broadband internet, and now preparing for what may become agriculture's next major infrastructure investment: AI computing. In this episode, Kevin shares how a small rural telephone company evolved into a modern broadband provider and why Iowa's independent telecommunications companies have been uniquely positioned to bring fiber internet to rural communities long before much of the country caught up. He explains how fiber optic networks work, why broadband is becoming just as essential as electricity, and why nearly every modern technology—from cellular service to Starlink—ultimately depends on fiber somewhere along the journey. The conversation then turns toward one of the fastest-growing topics in technology: artificial intelligence. Kevin explains why AI is creating unprecedented demand for computing power, what massive data centers mean for energy and infrastructure, and why he believes the future isn't giant facilities consuming thousands of acres—but rather distributed micro data centers that could fit on a single lot while serving customers around the world. The hosts also tackle concerns many farmers have about large data centers, including land use, energy consumption, and local economic impact. Kevin discusses how smaller AI computing facilities could create new opportunities without removing productive farmland while giving farmers more control over their own data. The discussion explores whether producers could someday "farm data" just like they market grain—owning, storing, and deciding when and how to monetize one of their operation's fastest-growing assets. Along the way, you'll also hear: How the internet actually reaches your farm Why symmetrical upload and download speeds matter The differences between fiber, cellular, and Starlink The future of precision agriculture and AI Why protecting farm data may become just as important as protecting grain in the bin Whether fiber optics will ever be replaced If you've ever wondered how technology is reshaping agriculture—or where rural America fits into the AI revolution—this episode offers a fascinating look at what's coming next. How One Dealer Is Changing Farm Equipment Service Forever cover art

How One Dealer Is Changing Farm Equipment Service Forever

In this episode, Tanner and Dave sit down with Stacy Anthony, CEO and co-founder of Ag Revolution, to discuss how his company is reshaping equipment sales and service across the Midwest. After spending 27 years with John Deere rebuilding dealerships and later creating one of the nation's largest agricultural equipment export businesses, Stacy set out to build something entirely different. He shares the story behind launching Ag Revolution, why the company invested in a fleet of more than 60 mobile service trucks instead of additional brick-and-mortar dealerships, and how servicing equipment directly on the farm is helping producers reduce downtime and keep operations moving. The conversation also dives into the evolution of Fendt and Massey Ferguson, what separates premium equipment from dependable value-focused machinery, how dealership culture impacts customer experience, and why building long-term relationships—not just selling equipment—has been the foundation of Ag Revolution's rapid growth. Along the way, Stacy reflects on his career traveling to 27 countries exporting farm equipment, receiving recognition at the White House, and the leadership lessons he learned from working with farmers around the world. Whether you're evaluating your next machinery purchase, interested in dealership trends, or simply enjoy hearing stories from leaders who are challenging the status quo, this episode offers a fascinating look at where agricultural equipment is headed. Hagie History: The Story of the World’s First Self-Propelled Sprayer cover art

Hagie History: The Story of the World’s First Self-Propelled Sprayer

The conversation begins with the life of founder Ray Hagie, an Iowa State graduate, farmer, entrepreneur, inventor, and public servant whose relentless focus on solving problems led to one of agriculture's greatest innovations. Faced with labor shortages during the 1940s and inspired by the introduction of 2,4-D herbicide, Ray envisioned a better way to apply crop protection products. In 1947, that vision became the world's first self-propelled sprayer. Kevin walks through the evolution of Hagie's equipment lineup, including: The early three-wheel machines The introduction of front-mounted booms The first hydrostatic drive sprayer Expansion into larger-capacity, high-clearance machines The development of iconic models like the 640, 8400, 2100, and STS series The discussion highlights how Hagie wasn't simply building machinery—it was creating timing flexibility and efficiency that farmers could never achieve with traditional pull-type sprayers. The episode also dives into: Why front-mounted booms were revolutionary How Hagie survived the difficult farm economy of the 1980s The advantages of remaining independent and focused on a niche market What customers demanded as sprayer technology evolved The importance of innovation culture within the company A major portion of the conversation centers on the 2016 partnership with John Deere. Kevin explains what led to the agreement, what both companies gained, and how Hagie has successfully maintained its unique identity while leveraging Deere's technology, precision agriculture systems, dealer network, and global reach. Along the way, listeners will hear stories about Ray Hagie's leadership, entrepreneurial mindset, and lasting influence on agriculture. The discussion also explores what Ray might be working on if he were innovating today and whether the spirit of problem-solving that built Hagie still drives the company forward. Whether you're a machinery enthusiast, Hagie owner, John Deere fan, or simply appreciate stories of agricultural innovation, this episode provides a fascinating look at one of the most important equipment manufacturers in farming history. Information for this episode was provided in the guest outline and historical materials supplied by the show team. Want Farm4Profit Merch? Cut Costs, Not Yield: What Iowa Soybean Research Is Showing Farmers cover art

Cut Costs, Not Yield: What Iowa Soybean Research Is Showing Farmers

www.iasoybeans.com/Farm4Profit Through more than 200 on-farm trials each year, the Iowa Soybean Association is helping farmers make better decisions based on real-world conditions, not controlled plots. Their work spans everything from seeding rates to fungicide use to nitrogen efficiency, all with one goal: improving profitability and sustainability at the farm level. One of the biggest takeaways? Many farmers are planting more soybean seeds than they need. Research shows populations can often be reduced to around 110,000 seeds per acre without sacrificing yield, creating a clear opportunity to cut input costs in tight-margin years. Another major focus has been fungicide and insecticide applications. Despite common “program” approaches where these products are applied every season, multiple years of trials have shown that in the absence of disease pressure, these applications rarely pay. In fact, only about one in five blanket applications delivers a return, reinforcing the importance of scouting before making application decisions. The conversation also highlights how far crop genetics have come—reducing the need for routine treatments that may have made sense years ago but don’t always deliver value today. On the corn side, nitrogen efficiency continues to stand out. Some of the most efficient operators are producing strong yields using as little as 0.6 pounds of nitrogen per bushel by leveraging practices like split applications and better timing. Trials are also exploring the value of stabilizers in spring-applied nitrogen, showing early signs that protecting that investment can make a difference. At its core, this episode reinforces a simple but powerful idea: farmers don’t need more data—they need better data they can trust. And when that data comes directly from farms like theirs, it becomes a tool they can use with confidence. If you’re looking for ways to trim costs, improve efficiency, and make smarter agronomic decisions, this is a conversation worth paying attention to. Want Farm4Profit Merch? Farmland, Risk & the Future of Ag cover art

Farmland, Risk & the Future of Ag

This episode takes a unique approach to ag finance: Jake explains how sophisticated lenders and institutional investors evaluate farming operations differently than producers often evaluate themselves. The discussion challenges farmers to step back and ask an important question: “If your farm walked into your office asking for a loan… would you approve it?” We break down: What lenders actually look at first when evaluating an operation What separates a “bankable” farm from a risky one Why consistency and decision-making discipline matter more than acres alone How lenders think in terms of risk while farmers often think in bushels The conversation introduces a practical framework for understanding farm financial health through three key buckets: Liquidity — Can you survive? Working capital Cash flow flexibility Burn rate management Equity — Can you withstand shocks? Land values Leverage ratios Collateral strength Efficiency — Can you win long-term? Cost structure ROI on assets Decision quality Jake also explains why institutional investors continue to value farmland as an asset class, what they see in agricultural real estate, and whether current farmland prices are sustainable. Additional topics include: Whether farmland is overpriced, fairly valued, or still undervalued What could actually cause land values to decline Why farmland may remain strong while farm cash flow weakens Long-term land financing versus operating lines Flexible financing structures and matching debt to asset life How growth-oriented operations approach lending differently What top-tier operators are doing differently in today’s economy Conversations successful operators are having with lenders right now The episode also explores how data, performance analysis, and decision-making tools used in athletics and business could transform financial management in agriculture. Ag Equipment and Farmland Market Update cover art

Ag Equipment and Farmland Market Update

With manufacturers calling 2026 the bottom — or near-bottom — of the current large-ag equipment cycle, farmers are left trying to answer a big question: is this a buying opportunity, a warning sign, or both? Luke and Andy bring real-world auction data and market perspective to help explain what’s actually happening with equipment values right now. We discuss: Whether 2026 feels worse, better, or just different than 2025 How auction results compare to manufacturer reports Why big iron like high-horsepower tractors, combines, sprayers, and planters is under pressure What equipment is still selling well Which machines are sitting longer than expected Who is selling right now: retirements, dealer trades, financial stress, or right-sizing Who is still buying aggressively Whether bankruptcies and forced liquidations are really increasing What separates successful sales from disappointing ones Why photos, records, transparency, and seller reputation matter more in a softer market What farmers should do today if they plan to sell equipment in the next six months The conversation also goes beyond machinery. We talk about the broader forces shaping buyer psychology, including tighter credit, repayment stress, interest rates, trade uncertainty, tariffs, Farm Bill delays, and global headlines. Then we connect equipment values to farmland. Land values remain strong in many regions, but cash flow is tightening. That raises an important question for farmers: are we becoming land rich and cash poor? Luke and Andy share what they’re watching in the farmland market, whether strong land values are still supporting confidence, and why machinery could stay soft even if land remains firm. Finally, we look ahead to summer and fall 2026. Will there be a seasonal bounce after planting? What needs to happen for the market to improve? And what could make it worse? Want Farm4Profit Merch? Meeting the Next Generation of Cattle Producers : Mike Schwarck

Mike brings a unique perspective to the conversation—not only as a producer, but also through his involvement with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, where he serves as chairman of the Business Issues Policy Committee. That combination of boots-on-the-ground experience and industry-level insight gives him a well-rounded view of the challenges and opportunities facing cattle producers today. We start with the story of Schwarck Farms—how the operation began, how it has evolved over the years, and what decisions have shaped its current structure. Like many operations, it hasn’t stayed static. Changes in markets, costs, and industry dynamics have required constant adjustment and a willingness to rethink how things are done. From there, we dig into decision-making. Mike shares how his approach has changed over time and why today’s producers need to be more strategic than ever. With volatility in markets, shifting regulations, and unpredictable weather, the margin for error is smaller. Having the right tools, advisors, and mindset can make the difference between staying ahead or falling behind. A key part of that conversation is his involvement with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Mike emphasizes the importance of being engaged—not just on your own farm, but within your community and industry organizations. Those connections help producers stay informed, influence policy, and ultimately make better decisions at the farm level. We also spend time talking about the next generation of cattle producers. Mike shares what he sees as the biggest challenges for young farmers today and the skills they’ll need beyond just raising livestock. Business management, marketing, and relationship-building are all becoming just as important as traditional production knowledge. Finally, we dive into cattle marketing. In a constantly changing market environment, timing and strategy matter more than ever. Mike explains how his marketing approach has evolved, what factors he pays closest attention to, and the common mistakes he sees producers making when margins get tight. This episode is a practical conversation about adapting, staying involved, and making smarter decisions in the cattle business—whether you’re just getting started or looking to improve your current operation. What’s Working in Ag: Measuring Grain Loss with Bushel Plus cover art

What’s Working in Ag: Measuring Grain Loss with Bushel Plus

Harvest efficiency has always been one of the biggest profit drivers on the farm—but it’s also been one of the hardest things to measure accurately. In this What’s Working in Ag segment from Commodity Classic, we sat down with Marcel from Bushel Plus to talk about a simple idea that’s making a major impact: actually measuring grain loss instead of guessing. For years, farmers relied on rough estimates—counting kernels on the ground, making visual judgments, or simply trusting experience. But as combines become more advanced with automation, sensors, and data systems, the need for accurate, real-world calibration has never been more important. That’s where Bushel Plus comes in. Their SmartPan system allows operators to safely and quickly measure exactly what’s coming out the back of the combine. With a remote-controlled drop pan, farmers can capture a sample during harvest, separate the grain from residue, and calculate true loss in just a few minutes. No guesswork. No unsafe methods. Just real numbers. And those numbers matter. Even a small amount of grain loss—just a couple bushels per acre—can add up to significant dollars across an operation. In many cases, farmers are surprised at how much they’re actually losing. Once they see it, they can’t unsee it—and more importantly, they can fix it. The impact goes beyond just saving grain. Reducing loss also means fewer volunteer crops, less need for additional passes or herbicide, and better overall field management. What makes this even more relevant today is the integration with modern combine technology. With John Deere’s recent partnership and endorsement, SmartPan is now being used to “ground truth” combine automation systems—helping machines calibrate properly and hit target loss levels more accurately. Whether you’re running the latest high-tech combine or an older machine, the concept is the same: you can’t manage what you don’t measure. And for many farmers, this tool pays for itself almost immediately—sometimes within the first few fields. The bottom line: harvest is too important—and margins are too tight—to leave bushels in the field. Tools like this are helping farmers capture more of what they’ve already worked all season to grow. How Technology is Transforming Hay Production cover art

How Technology is Transforming Hay Production

Today we’re diving into the latest advancements in hay equipment with a focus on round baler technology and how it’s helping farmers improve efficiency, consistency, and overall bale quality. From automation to data tracking, hay production is evolving fast—and the newest innovations are designed to reduce operator fatigue while delivering more uniform, higher-quality bales. One of the standout features is Weave Automation, which allows the baler to guide itself along the windrow. With a hitch that can swing side-to-side, the system automatically weaves across the windrow during bale formation. The result is more consistent bale shape and density, less need for constant steering, and a lower risk of pulling in dirt or debris. Beyond automation, today’s balers are equipped with advanced sensors that measure moisture and weight in real time. Operators can monitor conditions directly from the cab, making better decisions on the go. This data can also be uploaded into the John Deere Operations Center, giving farmers the ability to track bale performance, monitor trends, and document field activity over time. Moisture management continues to be a critical factor in hay quality, and baler-mounted testers now provide real-time readings during operation—helping reduce spoilage risk and improve storage outcomes. Upstream from the baler, windrowing and mowing equipment are also becoming more advanced. Self-propelled windrowers, merger attachments, integrated cameras, and in-cab controls allow operators to fine-tune their process and create ideal windrows for baling. These systems, combined with data tracking, help optimize cutting schedules and improve dry-down timing. All of this is connected through tools like JDLink and the John Deere Operations Center, where farmers can monitor machine performance, track field work, and make more informed decisions based on real data. The bottom line: hay production is no longer just about getting across the field—it’s about precision, consistency, and using technology to maximize quality and efficiency every step of the way.   www.johndeere.com Want Farm4Profit Merch? The Evolution of Witte Beef: Generations, Trucking, and Prime Steaks cover art

The Evolution of Witte Beef: Generations, Trucking, and Prime Steaks

Instead of chasing scale, the Witte family leaned into trucking, building a nationwide refrigerated logistics company. Then in the mid-2000s, they made another shift—this time back to cattle, but with a completely different focus: quality over quantity. Today, Witte Beef Co. is built around producing Prime-grade beef comparable to top steakhouses across the country—while maintaining control over nearly every input along the way. In this episode, we cover: The history of the Witte family operation from the 1940s to today Lessons learned from scaling up—and scaling back Why they shifted from commodity cattle to premium beef production How feeding, genetics, and environment impact marbling and taste Their monoslope barn system and low-stress cattle philosophy Growing 90%+ of their own feed and controlling input costs The finishing vs. breeding program strategy How trucking and logistics tie into their overall business And what it takes to build a vertically integrated, quality-focused beef brand This is a masterclass in adapting to markets, controlling your system, and building a premium product in agriculture.   www.johndeere.com Want Farm4Profit Merch? Former IRS and 20+ Year Renewable Fuels Expert talks 45Z

Here’s the reality: this is not a direct payment to farmers. It’s a producer tax credit for biofuel companies—but the potential impact on grain demand, carbon scoring, and farming practices could be significant. In this conversation, we cover: What 45Z actually is and how it works Why it was created and how it differs from past biofuel credits The role of carbon intensity (CI) scores Why rules are still not finalized—and what that means The GREET model and how emissions are calculated How farmers could eventually be involved through traceability and climate-smart practices What we know about timelines and the extension through 2029 And what (if anything) farmers should be doing right now This is one of the clearest explanations yet of a complicated program—and a must-listen if you’re trying to understand where this is headed. 45Z Update: Big Opportunity or Big Confusion for Farmers? cover art

45Z Update: Big Opportunity or Big Confusion for Farmers?

45Z is one of the most talked-about opportunities in agriculture right now—but it might also be one of the most misunderstood. In this What’s Working in Ag segment, Tanner and Corey break down the basics of the 45Z tax credit, what it actually is, and why farmers aren’t the ones receiving the check directly. Instead, this credit is designed for fuel producers—but the real question is whether that value makes its way back to the farm. They dive into carbon intensity (CI) scores, why your current farming practices already matter, and how everything from tillage to fertilizer use could impact future payments. But the biggest issue? The rules still aren’t finalized. With guidance from the IRS and Treasury still pending, and key decisions around the GREET model and emissions calculations yet to be locked in, farmers are left trying to make sense of a program that’s already technically in motion. This episode also opens the door for listener input—who should we bring on to break this down further? Because one thing is clear: this could have a major impact on farm profitability, but only if we understand it. Key Takeaways 45Z is a federal tax credit for low-carbon fuel production The credit goes to fuel producers—not directly to farmers Farmers impact the value through their carbon intensity (CI) score CI score is based on practices like tillage, fertilizer, yield, and inputs Lower CI score = higher value for fuel producers Rules are still not finalized by IRS and Treasury GREET model will be used to calculate emissions and credit values Public comment period has closed; hearing expected soon Implementation details (payments, tracking, verification) still unclear Potential exists—but uncertainty remains high Have questions about 45Z or know someone we should interview? What’s Working in Ag: Winning the Weed Control Battle cover art

What’s Working in Ag: Winning the Weed Control Battle

In agriculture, sometimes the best advice comes from the conversations farmers have at the coffee shop. That’s exactly the spirit behind the What’s Working in Ag segment — learning what is actually working in the field right now. In this episode, David Whitaker sits down with Jeff Moon of Corteva Agriscience, a Minnesota Market Development Specialist who has spent his entire career in agriculture. Together they break down one of the biggest challenges growers face every season: weed pressure and how to stay ahead of it. Jeff explains why weed management decisions today impact much more than the current crop. A single waterhemp plant can produce up to 500,000 seeds, and those seeds can remain viable in the soil for years — creating long-term weed pressure if problems aren’t addressed early. The conversation covers several practical insights farmers should consider when building their weed control programs: • Why weeds reduce yield by competing for sunlight, moisture, and nutrients multiple modes of action to prevent resistance 2–4 inches tall dramatically improves success Jeff also discusses how modern herbicide programs often combine multiple tools — including residual control and post-emerge options — to deliver more consistent results across different farming systems. Because every farm operates differently, the best weed control strategy depends on factors like tillage practices, cropping systems, and environmental conditions. The key takeaway: weed management is not a one-pass decision — it’s a season-long strategy. Want Farm4Profit Merch?
